Chiropractic as we know it can be traced back to 1895, but there are ancient Greek and Chinese records referring to spinal manipulation and even Hippocrates used manipulation in the 5th century BC.
During the 20th century, chiropractic grew world-wide, becoming the third largest independent healthcare profession in the Western Hemisphere. However, aspiring practitioners largely had to travel to the USA for their education. To resolve this, a group of British and European chiropractors established the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC). The AECC is now an associate college of Bournemouth University.
Just like nurses, dentists and other healthcare professionals, chiropractic is regulated by law. Statutory regulation is provided by The Chiropractors Act 1994.
The statutory regulator is The General Chiropractic Council (GCC). To legally practise chiropractic, an individual must be registered with the GCC.
When you visit us for the first time, we carry out a detailed health assessment to establish an overall picture of your health and determine whether chiropractic treatment is suitable. This involves questions about your medical history and a physical examination. If further investigations are required, such as an X-ray or blood tests, the chiropractor will advise you and may refer you to your GP.
