Chiropractor in Rugby and Leamington Spa | Chiropractic History and Treatments

Chiropractic is a treatment which offers hands-on pain management for all ages. The term chiropractic derives from Greek and means treatment by hand or manipulation. Chiropractic is performed by a practitioner called a chiropractor, such as the experts at Walton Chiropractic. We specialise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of disorders relating to the spine, nerves, joints and muscles. Treatment involves skilled and specific adjustments to ease movement and relieve pain.

Located in Leamington Spa, our clinic welcomes patients of all ages with all kinds of musculoskeletal problems. People come from Coventry, Rugby and across Warwickshire for our professional, patient-centred care.

Origin and Development of Chiropractic

Chiropractic as we know it can be traced back to 1895, but there are ancient Greek and Chinese records referring to spinal manipulation and even Hippocrates used manipulation in the 5th century BC.

During the 20th century, chiropractic grew world-wide, becoming the third largest independent healthcare profession in the Western Hemisphere. However, aspiring practitioners largely had to travel to the USA for their education. To resolve this, a group of British and European chiropractors established the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC). The AECC is now an associate college of Bournemouth University.

Regulations

Just like nurses, dentists and other healthcare professionals, chiropractic is regulated by law. Statutory regulation is provided by The Chiropractors Act 1994.

The statutory regulator is The General Chiropractic Council (GCC). To legally practise chiropractic, an individual must be registered with the GCC.

Chiropractic Treatment

Initial Consultation

When you visit us for the first time, we carry out a detailed health assessment to establish an overall picture of your health and determine whether chiropractic treatment is suitable. This involves questions about your medical history and a physical examination. If further investigations are required, such as an X-ray or blood tests, the chiropractor will advise you and may refer you to your GP.

Three Stages of Treatment

At Walton Chiropractic, we divide your treatment plan into three parts:

  • Correction – Treatment is aimed at providing immediate pain relief and functional improvement.
  • Stabilisation – The main aim at this stage is to maintain joint mobility and strengthen muscles. Treatment is less frequent and you will receive an exercise regime.
  • Prevention – When optimal function is achieved, we recommend check-ups to maintain results and prevent problems reoccurring.
